Transesophageal Echo

A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is a specialized ultrasound test that uses a flexible probe inserted down the patient's throat into the esophagus to capture detailed images of the heart's structures. This position provides clearer views of the heart, especially the atria and valves, making TEE useful for detecting blood clots, assessing valve function, and evaluating blood flow. The patient is sedated and may receive a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. The procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes, and while it is generally safe, there is a small risk of complications such as sore throat or injury to the esophagus. A cardiologist interprets the results and may recommend further tests or treatments based on the findings.
